Also, on a completely unrelated note, Peter, you may be happy to know that I asked for Planescape: Torment as my contest prize ^^ I also bought Mass Effect and Bioshock >.>

I agree with the fact that the variety in Nintendo's picks most likely comes from their easier access to a wider array of games. It probably also comes from the fact that they are professionally invested in the videogaming industry, so they are likely to be interested in a wider range of videogaming aspects. Some people out there will only play heavily advertised new games with zomg!graphics and a high "coolness" factor, rather than investigating other things that may not be as mainstream. In that sense, perhaps, there is an element of being "out of touch", but probably consciously so: the magazine staff know that they have a different approach to games from the casual gamer which probably forms the majority of people polled, and they know that this can't be helped.
Although, unfortunately, this may lead to some games having seemingly more of an impact than they deserve: just as Brian said about Kingdom Hearts. Granted, I've never actually played any game in the series, but simply because the premise puts me off completely. There's something wrong at being able to justapose Goofy with Cloud or Squall, for example. That, and I really despise the "Nomurian/kiddy hip" overhaul that some of the FF characters got (Seifer & co. come to mind, as well as Squall).

Splitting companies is always such a mess. Hopefully they'll manage to get something good out of it though. Although "lack of originality" doesn't usually bode too well for a first effort, in my book...
Can Sonic reclaim his former glory? (Part 2) 05 Jan 2010 10:36:42
Well, at least it wasn't a colossal failure, eh? Guess there's hope for ol' Sonic yet then.
And I must admit that the ability to save anywhere sounds like a godsend. Because you never know when disaster may strike or duty may call. On the other hand, I can also see how that could remove any sense of challenge from the game. I remember thinking that there were too many save points in Crisis Core, for example. Although I guess that's not quite the same thing. It's kind of like this: the ability to save anywhere presumes that unforeseen circumstances may occur that will force you to stop playing quickly; the omnipresence of save points just presumes that you suck at the game. Or that the developers were lazy with area design and made tiny zones. And laziness is certainly a recurrent criticism for me, as far as Crisis Core goes.

Does Halo have the same epic flame wars as FF does?

Well, they do have the means to influence convention, so I can't exactly blame them for that. But it's not just that this is an experimental fail, it's also that they're being complacent: simply because it's got "FFVII" in the name, they're assuming that people are gonna gobble it down without question and be grateful for it. And a lot of them do: the game's actually quite popular and even seems to get good ratings (don't ask me how). That's also what annoys me about it: if people would judge it simply by its own merits, there would be very little to say in its favour. Kind of like the FFIV sequel.

Ok, yeah, you have a point. I guess it's an impressive feat. Here's to hoping they can repeat it.

I like that half-demon store owner already.
Oh god, not complicated stats...That's NOT a good thing. Big party-pooper right there. I already thought that the VP battle system was complicated, so this sounds like it'll be mind-boggling...
However, £11.33 is a good price. Especially considering that the game is €49 on the French Amazon.
