What you say about Chrono's lack of involvement reminds me of Half-Life. Throughout the entire series, you are just one man running through a series of events in which other people interact and cause other events which you just run through. This has been a major gripe with most of the fans xD
I'm guessing the idea is the character becomes more of a blank canvass which the player can paint themselves on to.. =/
